The lady who inspired “Mean Girls” is angry Tina Fey and Paramount cashed in on her work when she had nothing left… and now she says she’s doing something about it.
Author Rosalind Wiseman told the NY Post this weekend she and her lawyers are taking legal action to investigate the movie studio’s accounts to find out if there’s any money they’ve made over the years from “Mean Girls” that could be sent her way.
The reason… Wiseman says she feels like she’s lost out on a lot of potential money since the release of the hit 2004 movie — especially in light of the Broadway musical that was made about it… which has done quite well. has been doing for years in different markets.
According to RW, the deal she signed with Paramount and TF at the time — which gave her a one-time $400,000 and which she acknowledges gave up all rights to the work and/or derivatives — guaranteed net profit points, meaning she could do more based on how well the movie did. However, she claims that Paramount has told her over and over that there’s nothing left of the pie for her… and they haven’t actually collected much of it in the long run.
Wiseman thinks that’s BS — and her lawyer, Ryan Keechsays: “I suspect most people would be shocked at how shabbily Rosalind Wiseman has been treated. And rightly so.”
He adds, “It is nothing short of shameful for a company with the resources of Paramount to go so far as to deny Ms. Wiseman what she is reasonably entitled to for creating what has become one of the most iconic.” entertainment franchises of the past 25 years.” Rosalind and co. say they want to monitor Paramount and are considering further legal action…although they don’t specify exactly how they will get Paramount to comply.
As many people know… ‘Mean Girls’ is based on Wiseman’s 2002 parenting book, ‘Queen Bees and Wannabes’, which Tina read and thought it might make a good script.
Of course she was absolutely right… the movie became a cult classic and serves as a staple of the 2000s. The point is… Wiseman sounds salty about how Tina Fey has reused the material over the years, claiming that TF’s even have roped in for performances and workshops (regarding smaller “Mean Girls” plays) without paying her an extra penny.
She says, “Obviously I’m recognized and acknowledged by Tina as the source material, the inspiration. I’m recognized and yet I don’t deserve anything?”
Wiseman adds, “Tina has spoken so eloquently about women supporting other women, but it’s becoming increasingly clear to me that, in my own personal experience, that’s not going to be the experience. You don’t just talk about supporting women, you actually do it.”
