Free to play online MMO looter Lot 2released in 2017, is one of my favorite video games. I play it all the time. I have several characters. I own all recent seasons. It’s fantastic. But I’d be lying if I said I’m not worried about the future of the game with each passing season, it seems to become more prone to breaking. In fact, as I write this paragraph at around 4pm on January 24, the game remains offline as Bungie continues to investigate the latest issue. Meanwhile, many players are hoping for an all-new engine and game, probably in the form of Lot 3. But things are never that simple.

Earlier today, Lot 2 has been taken offline on all platforms while Bungie examined players who lost progress on triumphs and seals, which work as in-game achievements and challenges. It’s certainly not the end of the world, but last week a few players reported losing their characters along with all their progress and items. And before that, it was a new mission that didn’t update properly for players. And before that it was something else. In 2023, after years of updates, expansions and more, it feels like this Lot 2 begins to collapse under its own weight.

Take a look at Bungie’s official support account on Twitter-which is often updated regularly to inform players about upcoming patches, server issues and other vital information about Lot 2– you can find a lot of tweets that boil down to Bungie saying “Cub, this isn’t working. We’re trying to fix it. More info later.” Online games not working every day is not new and it is not an exclusive problem Lot 2. But is starting to become a more common problem with the aging shooter. Looking at that support account, many tweets about bugs or failed missions are not weeks, but only a few days or less.

Anecdotally, playing my time Lot 2 lately is buggier than ever. This new season brought cool new heist missions as well as weird lag that I’ve never seen before. I still run into the problem that the game doesn’t count every PvP match, making us play more to complete challenges and weekly missions. And I’ve just accepted that in-game bounties tied to kills, missions, or other activities don’t always update as they should. In fact, the more I think about it, the more I realize that I and other players I know have just gotten used to it Lot 2 are not reliable. And it seems to be getting worse, not better, as the game expands and adds more layers and systems.

Look online and you’ll soon see players suggesting that Bungie should move forward with a theory Lot 3, a game that is likely to happen – and may already be in development – but has not been confirmed. During today’s extended downtime, Lot 3 was trending on Twitter while players argued about the shooter’s future and stability. For some, the idea of a new engine and fresh slate felt promising, giving hope it would solve many of the problems destination 2′s problems. Others pointed it out Which a brand new game is not easy to make or easy to launch, and is likely to be missing features or content with the release. Plus, there is no guarantee it would solve all emerging problems.

Personally I think a new one Destination would probably be a good move to make in the end. It could allow the developers to make something more flexible and be able to handle the kind of events they spent years working on and perfecting. But I’m also not naive enough to believe it would solve everything or be easy to make. Still, I understand the frustration that players feel Lot 2 consistently inconsistent.

Like an old PC or blender, Lot 2 works mostly but it is covered in duct tape, dents and dirt. And occasionally you have to kick it or fiddle with the cord to get it to work. Sure, it’ll still come alive for now, but you’ll probably have to replace it one day. And with Lot 2I have a feeling that Bungie will hit the tape for as long as it takes Lot 2 to survive until the end of the planned roadmap, which will likely see the final season arrive in 2024. After that I don’t know. Hopefully by then the game will at least feel more stable and reliable, not worse.
